    A very Special Town Meeting

    by: Brian

Wed Oct 22, 2008 at 20:07:52 PM EDT

It's that time of year again: the Special Town Meeting.  On the warrant this year are your boring, run of the mill articles, but this year the Selectmen and the Planning Board have thrown in a little something to prevent you from dozing off during the rousing discussions of special mitigation funds and line item transfers: sex.

Yes, folks, sex.  Tucked away into the dry little warrant dealing with the sign code and dumpsters is a change to the zoning by laws creating a new smut district conveniently located off of Rt 128.  Neighbors - commercial and residential - of the proposed Allied Drive location, and one in particular,  are none too pleased with the thought of sex toys and videos being peddled steps away from their doorsteps.  I think when all is said and done the two boards offering the amendment have found the best of the few available options, and I plan to support it - with a couple minor amendments.

To help you make a more informed decision I've included after the jump some resources for your review.  You can always find this diary by clicking on the picture of the Town Crier in the left hand column.  (Random fact: There is an American Guild of Town Criers.  They still ring bells and everything.)

Brian :: A very Special Town Meeting
  • First off, the warrant.  This lays out the 13 items we have on the agenda for the evening of November 17th.

  • Next, here is what the sex offender by law will look like should the amendments in Article Nine pass.  The changes are highlighted.

  • Those of you fortunate enough to have Peter Zhaka as your attorney, or friend, have probably already received this, but here is his summary of zoning and sign articles that appear.  Nothing like a lawyer to break things down and make them simpler for you.

  • Here is a link to the Town's by laws.  They are still somewhat out of date, but the sex offender by law was finally added to it in the last week, so thank you to whomever was responsible for that.

  • These are all the posts that have been written here dealing with this Very Special Town Meeting.

Better to have a zoned sex area away from the center of town than let the adult entertainment folks go where ever they want. Like on Eastern Avenue across from Staples and the gym. Next door to Vineyard Vine. Down the street from the park, Middle School, and HS. Now you'll be able to work out, get your office supples, wine, and porn in one stop. That's right! And there's nothing we can do about it because there was no zoning for adult entertainment. I heard the only thing we can do is get mom's picketing out front. So at least with the new bylaw adult entertainment stores will have to go in the zoned area which is kind of out of the way.

    Amazing Video Store (0.00 / 0)
Yes, it's not ideal to have a sex shop so close to where kids walk, but that store is about as non-descript as they come. And news flash: Kids are getting this stuff on computers not in stores (and let's be honest, so are most adults!).

Now, if we really want to complain about something...how about all those guns at Dick's that are there for all the kiddies to see? Talk about pornographic!

The 1986 Attorney General Commission on Pornography defined pornography as material that is "predominantly sexually explicit and intended primarily for the purpose of sexual arousal."  Now, I agree that the guns are hardly appropriate in that location, but calling them pornographic is stretching it.

    Court House (0.00 / 0)
On the same street where there is a Juvenile Courthouse.  NICE

    all I can say is (0.00 / 0)
I'm REALLY glad I don't live near Allied drive.  Yikes.

    don't tell Canton about this! (0.00 / 0)
I think it's awesome that Dedham is contemplating an adult entertainment zone right next to Westwood Station. If Westwood Station fails to develop, perhaps we could turn University Ave into a strip of gentleman's clubs, adult video stores, sex arcades, and sex toy shops. Then, we could rename University Ave to Galvin Boulevard.

    great idea (0.00 / 0)
and we should add some more gun shops too! I'm sure two isn't enough.

    Where are the two? (0.00 / 0)
Kind of crossing threads here, but gun stores have been mentioned twice now and I'm not sure of the connection between them and the proposed zoning change.

Here's what I can't help but think about when reading all the doom and gloom posts about this:

Frank Rittenhauer: If this factory goes under, the whole town goes under.
Boardroom Woman: That's when the whores come in.
Paul: Excuse me, what was that?
Boardroom Woman: Men laying their trick-money down. Twenty dollars to pay the rent? Maybe not. Maybe instead I'll spend it on the whore.

That's from "Tommy Boy" and seems analogous to what some are thinking.  I think the similarity is funny, but in a sad, chicken-little kind of way.

Legacy Place has been around for a year now. How do you like it?
Great! I go there all the time.
Good. I'm glad we have it, but I don't go often.
It's OK. Doesn't affect me one way or another.
Bad. It's been a net-negative for the town.
Terrible! I wish they never built it.
